Description of Species Small trees, up to 7 m tall; bark gray-brown. Leaves green; petiole glabrous; leaf blade narrowly elliptic, oblong-elliptic, oblong-lanceolate, leathery, both surfaces glabrous, base acute, margin serrate, apex acuminate. Flower greenish in short racemes or reduced panicles borne singly or in condensed clusters in leaf axils; bracts ovate (staminate flowers) to lanceolate (pistillate flowers), glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Sepals 4 or 5, persistent, ovate or lanceolate; staminate flowers: stamen filaments eventually. anthers ellipsoid, minute; disk glands small. Pistillate flowers: disk annular or few lobed, ovary ovoid. Fruit a berry red when ripe, drying black, globose; seeds 4 or 5, brown when dried, ovoid, flattened on one or more sides.
